       You are a female coming home from a fun night out at 1 am and your uber drops you off just slightly away from your house. After all those snaps you have taken, your phone is as good as dead. You walk that extra block in your gorgeous 4-inch heels and little can you tell, there is a guy walking behind you catcalling and gaining speed on you. You tell him politely you are not interested and he violently gets in your face and pins you against the wall in anger as there is no one else outside to stop him. Your heart dropped and fear is pumping in your blood. What do you do?
If you can't defend yourself, this can go in 100 different tragic ways.

Situations like this HAPPEN ALL THE TIME !!! You don't have to be in that specific scenario but walking home, in a parking lot or even a house break-in. Women need to be able to defend themselves because more often than not, situations like these will not end in the women's best interest.
My focus for this project is empowering women and giving them more confidence and safety in their daily lives.
     Violence against women comes in several shapes and forms. You have the cat calling and winking in the streets that you can usually walk away from with no harm. There is partner abuse, rape, and harassment. There is stranger based relationship rape, there is sex trafficking, kidnapping etc that list can go on and on. Currently, " Adult women account for 51 percent of all human trafficking victims detected globally. Women and girls together account for 71 percent, with girls representing nearly three out of every four child trafficking victims. Nearly three out of every four trafficked women and girls are trafficked for the purpose of sexual exploitation  ( UNwomen 1)" There is also a baffling statistic that states," In 15 states, more than 40% of all homicides of women in each state involved intimate partner violence (Kellner  1 )" 
    If I was to put every single statistic, this entire proposal would fill up extremely fast. But stats can only tell you so much.  Females are in constant fear and battle with the outside world in any interaction they have. I, as a 2o-year-old female, can attest to this. I've had night classes every semester in college so far and I don't drive so I take the train home which takes me about a 1 of total wait time outside ( an actual 10 min ride ). Almost every night,, there is this one guy - drunk or not - that just simply will not leave me alone with all this cat calling and constant approaching me. It is even worse when it is a group of guys. I am usually very kind to them and tell them to leave but some just don't and think I am playing hard to get so they try and hold my hand or STROKE MY HAIR ( very disturbing ). I've had guys follow me on my two trains and then home !!! However, I proceed with these situations with confidence as I am trained in Martial Arts and self-defense. My body and brain go into automatic fight alert because I know what to do and I am ready to defend myself if things get too far which I had to do many times. Females go through this all the time and this is my way of giving them a tool to help them in situations like this in order to just feel a little more confidence in what they have to do. It has personally helped me so much in look of my life and mental health. Macarei said, " Evidence of the effectiveness of martial arts in producing affective, cognitive and behavioural benefits has come from a number of studies. Improvements in self-esteem , a more positive response to physical challenge , greater autonomy, emotional stability and assertiveness  and reductions in anxiety and depression 
have all been associated with martial arts training. It has also drawn attention to the social benefits of such behavioural change – in particular the relationship between martial arts practice and aggression.
Project : I can offer self Defense classes for women free of charge. 

This is something I can do very easily as I already know all I have to teach. This will literally allow females to use their bodies as a weapon when needed. Your body is the best and most convenient weapon. I want every woman to walk with confidence in the streets and to be able to take care of herself in situations like this. Yes, knowing a few self-defense moves will get the man off you and you'll be able to escape but I will be much more than that. Being strong and able to defend one's self will give a new self of empowerment and that empowerment will translate into our daily life. Being active and aware of your body will give women more self love and confidence to hold their ground in their every day life.

Advertisement plan: Making flyers with my classes dates and with the statistics on them ( so women are aware of what is really going ) and posting them on my IG - my Dojo's IG - NJCU's IG. I will post them on this page Bayonne talks which has over 16k people and any other platforms that I have access to. 
I also plan to keep my classes small to about 8 people so I can give my full attention to them ( if I get help from my friends - will hold bigger classes ). 
I also plan to make a brief video with any stories the women want to share to give them a community atmosphere.

I want this to be a ripple effect where one females tell the other about the benefits and peace of mind this will bring them.

Project Proposal - women in criminology

I plan to focus my project on women in criminology. However, this doesn’t necessarily only include women from a traditional backing, for example Carol Christine Smart who is a published sociologist figurehead of the feminism movement within criminology, personally working on multiple theories. I’d like to include women who are unconventional, yet still have an effect on the criminology world. The main inspiration for this decision was the news of Kim Kardashian taking part in writing criminal legislation with the US government. (Trump, 2018) Initially, some may have laughed at this at first, questioning what Kim Kardashian could offer, but with a unique perspective and personal experience with crime, such as her robbery in Paris (Corinthios, 2018) and the release of a private tape (Extra TV, 2007), she has used her position and public power to shed light on people facing long sentences, in her view, unjustly. (Pye, 2018) Unsurprisingly, this was met with a strange sex-fuelled disdain by poking fun at Kardashian’s status a female known for her body confidence. (NY Post, 2018) This interested me due to the potential for other women to be goaded in a similar way. Another example of a woman unconventionally involved with criminology is actress and activist Laverne Cox. With her work on shows politically motivated, such as prison drama Orange is the New Black and legal drama Doubt, she has the interpersonal experience with the daily situations of a transgender woman’s problems in the US prison system, or the troubles faced by a transgender attorney passionately working for minorities and civil rights cases. (Nandi, 2017) Her interviews and social media accounts are all rooted in the awareness for LGBT+ causes as well as issues such as the gun debate, which opens a new generation of young followers to the political world.

Historically, women haven’t received sufficient recognition for their contributions to the world outside of their physical beauty. People will remember actress Hedy Lamarr for her beauty in My Favourite Spy, or Ecstasy, but her scientific contribution into technology was a great deal of what allowed the Allies to win WWII. (Famous Women Inventors, 2008) The only reason she isn’t celebrated for her technological genius is due to society deeming her looks more important than something that ultimately saved thousands of lives and was developed further into what gives us wireless connections to the internet, benefiting millions. Another source of inspiration was my interest in horror, growing up with an excess of silly, but beautiful, women running up the stairs instead of out the door from a killer. This, and other common tropes, was poked at in satirical horrors like Wes Craven’s Scream (1996) but I saw a more serious female horror character came into play, directly combatting these expectations, with Clarice Starling in Jonathan Demme’s Silence of the Lambs (1991). I can’t recall when I first saw this film, old enough to understand what she felt when the lingering eyes from a group of policemen tell her she’s out of place, but it stuck with me. I’d go to classes diligently, learning early theory when criminology was coming into itself as a science, but everything still had a focus on the male perspective. Classical theories such as strain theory or differential association theory were all from a male perspective or set women in a double standard. Women, until very recently, have not had a comfortable place in the criminology community.

With this project, I’d like to highlight these issues of minimal or inaccurate representation, delve into the wonderful women forgotten by mainstream criminology, and their contributions that will likely fade out of the history books completely until female researchers achieve the same recognition as male researchers.

Ideally, I’d use Instagram to write out my thoughts. Initially, I believed a blog would be a good idea, but I couldn’t imagine too many people having the interest to switch from one platform to another to read my words with no audience. Instagram has a character limit of 2200, which would keep my posts shorter, but challenge me to compact details into smaller chunks, easily digested. This would hopefully lead to a more regular flow of posts, I’m aiming for at least a bi-weekly post flow. The formatting of the platform makes for a great way to find an audience with up to thirty hashtags per post and an aesthetically pleasing view of pictures someone could click on, immediately knowing who they’re going to read about. Because posts allow up to 10 images, I could even utilise them for sources to save using up my character limit on links to journals or articles. There’s also the ability to comment thoughts on posts and repost things.

As a woman in the 21^st century of criminology studies, I think this project is close to my heart both personally, but as a duty in pursuit of knowledge. Letting important findings go forgotten is, to me, akin to lighting another fire to The Great Library of Alexandria.

The Crime Conversation (The Crime Conversation, 2018) is a cool blog with great articles, and specifically a tag for women in criminology. I think something like this would be a good place to source inspiration from. Regarding the Instagram layout, I really love @Makerswomen’s (Makerswomen) display with posts about trailblazing women, throughout all professions. So far, I haven’t found exactly what I’m doing, so surely that’s a good thing, but it’s a little unnerving to step into unfamiliar territory.

Paulo Freire’s action will influence his students and his students will able to think about his action which is the method and reason of transversely.

Strong and meaningful quote that the starter or the artist who try to be against patriarchy or any kind of movement can influence others and give a thought and motivation for the secondary movement.

Discrimination based on gender is still an ongoing problem these days. From the beginning men have always had the power and used their power to control others. The most powerful man would have several wives, and the power or leadership to the patriarchy system. When the definition of power changed to money from strength, men did not let women  have an opportunity to study so men would monopolize the power in society to over control women. This is the reason that made beauty and youth as the only strength for females. In these days, female receive more opportunities than before, however, there are still a lot of females who do not get a chance to study and get treated differently or even get payed differently although they have same abilities as their male counterparts. Patriarchy is all over the world and the stricter a patriarchy is, the more females do not get their human rights.

Males are often get taught that they should or need to be strong and tough. There is a phrase that people often use, “man up”. This phrase shows that men should not feel sad, need to be strong, and should not feel down by whatever circumstance that male is facing. This photo above is an example that I found in a mall of the how man is related to “strong” and “tough”. This photo was in a men’s shirts section in Newport mall. The poster of this shirt is trying to show how flexible their shirt is. However, the model is grumpy, upset looking with a gesture of pushing or boxing, which is really an unnecessary pose to do for man, or a man who would be dressed as he is, because no such man will buy that outfit to have a fist fight.

This is an example of the patriarchy in 2019. This is the poster of one of a new upcoming famous movie all over the world called Avengers:End Game by Marvel. The story of the Avengers: End Game will be fighting against Thanos the villain. As the comics are and as all the fan know, the character, Captain Marvel will be the key to defeat Thanos, However, on the poster of the Avengers, Captain America is at the front and center of the poster, which gets most attention on the poster. The female cast of the movie on this poster are minimal and less noticeable, especially Captain Marvel. 

Females get less opportunity to study, have a hard time getting hired, and are paid less than males. I am a marketing major and I am aware of the discrimination in marketing or any kind of work place so I wanted to research more about the gender wage gap and any kind of discrimination in our society related to the job. I will write an essay about the wage gap and conduct an interview about my dad. My dad runs a small business in Korea, and he is still in some ways an old fashioned man who still thinks that the man needs to be the one to earn money for their family, which shows that the patriarchy system is still alive in Korea. According to OECD data, Korea has the largest gender wage gap among all other OECD countries and have only 9.1% women in politics  

 In the United States, they discriminate based on race/ethnicity, age, gender, and education level. There is very present a gender wage gap in the U.S. It is also known that male-dominated industries tend to have higher wages than industries and occupations made up mostly of female workers. With all these problem I will write an essay about the patriarchy affecting the pay gap, discrimination, and lack of opportunity for females and why it should be fixed and publish it on the blog or twitter.

Project Proposal- Karla Almonte

Protest for Cristina, a women murdered by her ex-boyfriend.

Feminicide is one of the most extreme expression of violence against women, it is defined to be a sex-based hate crime against females just because they are females.  My semester project will be based on impactful feminicide victims in the Dominican Republic, where I was born and raised for fifteen years. The project will consist on a series of illustrations that will depict the victims in a positive way, alongside with short writings about their case and their persona. As a Latina woman, I have always been drawn to bringing awareness into issues that affect other women, specially issues that have surged from a patriarchal and chauvinist culture and have such a big impact in the Dominican Republic as a society.

Since I was very young, I became very aware of the high levels of homicide that took place around my location, particularly those which affected woman due to how it ended up affecting myself. The way in which they affected myself was by altering how I approached and viewed life. I was not able to do the same things that men could, and I became aware of that at a very young age; I was also encouraged to be very meticulous when I started dating because who knows, you might get killed by a man sedated by power. All of this, and other instructions were inculcated by family members for as long as I came remember, and it is very likely that it happened in other Dominican households that were consumed by the fear of losing their girls to a man without remorse. Due to my experiences of living those tragedies from a close proximity, I have decided to embark in this project. I want to make this project because it is a topic I am extremely passionate about, and it needs to be shed more light into.

After a controversial case in 2017, the concept of making this series came to me but since it was such a sensitive subject to touch I decided to put it aside until this moment. The case consisted of an underage pregnant girl being murdered by her boyfriend and her mother-in-law after not wanting to perform an abortion. Subsequently to killing her by performing an illegal abortion, they put her body in a suitcase and dumped her in a remote location. The case included many vile factors to say the least, but the perpetrators were not correctly punished for the crime. My aim with this project is to bring awareness to this phenomenon and promote people to advocate for these victims and for the judicial system to sentence the criminals accordingly. The audience targeted is thought to be Dominicans residing outside of the Dominican Republic, but I also plan on the inclusion of Latin American countries that are being affected as well.

The methods that will be utilized to reach my audience will include an exhibition of the art in a gallery to reach a local audience, spreading the illustrative posters around locations vastly populated by Dominicans and other Latino communities, and an Instagram page where images of the creative process could be found as well as additional information about the cause and the victims. The Instagram page can be also used for interaction amongst the community and the artist, as well as a platform where other artists advocating for the same issue can be featured. By choosing Instagram as a collateral publisher, I will be able to reach larger masses beyond my initial target, and also enable the audience to create a deeper connection with the work since they are seeing behind the scenes.

A project that has inspired me to create my own is “No estamos todas” which means we aren’t all here. This project was created by an anonymous artist. Her aim with this project was to put a face on feminicide, and spark conversations in regards to how machismo violence has taken the lives of many women. Her and other artists illustrate the victims of feminicide from Mexico after researching about their cases. The illustrations are often inspired by the life of the victims, and they are portrayed in a positive manner that way their life can be celebrated.

My semester project is also looking to celebrate the more than fifty lives that were taken away in 2018, and the one hundred and seventy in 2017; and the hundreds more that were taken away in the previous years and that keep being lost as the years pass in the Dominican Republic. I am seeking to reach the eyes of the people whom are causing this issue to continue, and reach those who have the passion to make this change. This project goes beyond having a good portfolio piece and it goes beyond artistic exposure. I want to contribute to a cause that has affected my country for decades, and the security of women overall.

 My semester project is focusing on art that is created from ultrasounds. My major is sonography so I chose to focus on ultrasounds. To some ultrasounds are just black and white blobs of nothing. For others they are the most energizing piece of pregnancy. The look at your child makes everything feel genuine, and gratitude to the sonogram, you may wind up enjoying a look each day. To you, it portrays your delightful child, yet to every other person, it's only a high contrast mass. An Irish craftsman has willingly volunteered to make sonograms feel less clinical, infusing some identity into the outputs. Laura Steerman, an Irish mother of three who makes unique sonogram depictions for guardians. Despite the fact that she doesn't view herself as an expert craftsman she's a legal advisor in terms of professional career her now-fruitful business began as not by any means an interest, however a snapshot of cleansing. Semester Project Proposal

The main topic of my semester project is being a “Role Model.” Becoming a role model doesn’t come overnight. Most of us have that one person in our lives that we looked up to at a young age that slowly pave the way for us into becoming the person that we are proud to be today. True role models are those who possess the qualities that we would like to have, and those who have affected us in a way that makes us want to be better people. There are many qualities that role models have. They demonstrate confidence and leadership. A good role model is always positive, calm, and confident in themselves. You don’t want to look up to someone who is down and tries to bring you down. Everyone likes a person who is happy with their achievements but continues to strive for bigger and better objectives. One major quality that a good role model should have is not being afraid to be unique. Being proud of the person you’ve become throughout any obstacles that was put in front of you is key. You want role models who won’t pretend to be someone they are not and won’t be fake just to please other people. Finally, in my opinion, being humble and being able to admit to mistakes is very important. Nobody is perfect. When you make a bad decision, let those who are watching and learning from you know that you made a mistake and show them how you plan on correcting it. By apologizing and accepting accountability you will be demonstrating an often-overlooked part of being a role model. You want to be able to show whoever is looking up to you that you are a human being just like them and owning up to mistakes is a part of life. We often don’t recognize true role models until we have noticed our own personal growth and progress. The reason why I chose this topic for my semester project is because this is what I truly believe in when it comes to making a difference in myself, the youth, and the community. I currently work with the youth as a boxing trainer. I show and help the kids not just the training techniques in boxing but how to become a leader in this world and not to be a follower. A lot of these kids that walk into the gym for the first time are either forced by their parents or they simply don’t enjoy it. Most of the time, the kids that walk in for the first time with those qualities are the ones who don’t have that one individual who they can go to for guidance in whether they should pursue in the activity. It doesn’t necessarily have to be their parents all the time. It only takes one individual, such as me, to give confidence in the youth and repeatedly remind them that they can conquer anything they set their mind to. Having that one individual in your life can really make a difference. This goes back to the definition of being a role model. Great role models aren’t just “teachers.” They are constant learners, challenge themselves to get out of their comfort zones, and surround themselves with smarter people. When you surround yourself with smarter people you can take what you learned from them, keep it with you forever and later pass it down to the next generation of kids and let them remind themselves who taught them the ways of being a leader. This reminds me of the saying “you are who you hang out with.” Instead of bringing the audience to the gym, the way I would engage with them is by bringing the gym to the audience. By letting them see what I do on a day to day basis they will have a visual idea of what exactly I’m talking about when it comes to motivating and lifting the youth. Making a video/small documentary of the gym and everyone who is involved in it, especially the youth, was the first thing that came to my mind. By doing so the audience will then noticed that it’s not just about the sport of boxing but it is also about staying on top of school. School is a major topic when motivating the youth. Kids will slowly but surely notice how important it is for them and for their future and without it theirs no end goal. Educating the youth is so powerful because you never know who’s listening and who’s taking the time to think and say to themselves “I want to be like him/her when I grow up.”
