Feast & Famine Essay

With a pleasure to going to this exhibition, we had an honor to witness many great projects. Many tell a story of how reality is as an activist cause. Each with meaningfx ul meaning to it. More as a message then visuals. My project discusses financial issues that we as a whole goes through everyday . An issue that is a very reality to many middle class and lower people that want to have an education. Because as what we know , college is not cheap.
The first artwork that caught my attention is the “Denim Day” it’s tells a story about victim that has been harassed by a 45 year old driving teacher that has harassed a an 18 year old . During her driving lesson , the driver stopped and forced her to have sex with him. Forced her to take her tight jean off herself and then continue to rape l. And then claimed that it wasn’t rape because she took her pants off so it was consensual sex. This concludes that this can happen to anyone at any time. Also the artwork “what were you wearing”. This display also represents victim that have been sexually assaulted. There were four different types of clothing in this exhibition a dress, pajamas, a Nike running tank and running shorts, and a T-shirt and jeans.
Although most the project is hard to relate to my semester project. This project talk about kids that are and have been through a struggle. That some can never go back from . Something they have to live with. Really relates to those that don’t have a chose to go to college because of lack of money and also debt that they go through with the rest of their lives .
The next project I will be talking about is the Lauren Greenfield project. It represents a girl becoming skinny . That's promoting eating disorder and also anorexia awareness . Lauren Greenfield’s series THIN is a photographic essay and a documentary film about the treatment of eating disorders.THIN provides a window into the complicated and hard process of treatment, the culture of rehab, an d the experience of struggling with an eating disorder.Society holding great amounts of blame, the experiences those girls have gone through has lead them to fall into a pit of mental stress. And it’s cause from situation or problem experience . And this leads to how it relates to my project. How the worry of student loans and other college expenses can effect the mental health of students which can lead to things such as mental illness and eating disorders. Eating disorders pose a serious problem to millions of college students nationwide. And it have happen. “Full-blown eating disorders typically begin between 18 and 21 years of age, according to the National Eating Disorders Association (NEDA). The association estimates that between 10 and 20% of women and 4 to 10% of men in college suffer from an eating disorder, and rates are on the rise.”-https://www.google.com/amp/s/childmind.org/article/eating-disorders-and-college/amp/
These opportunity that I want to promote may reduce it tremendously.

Update for Project

These are my semester projects that I am working on
Simple black and white poster focusing gender equality
I was thinking the poster should be simple so people can easily get interested and understand. In our society we often divide each other by our gender, however, we are all same human being who are capable of anything. I wanted to talk about that we have no difference between man and woman.

Poster of equal payment
Often food is something what woman has to make. In a society ruled by patriarchy system, they often say female must know how to cook and male should not be near the kitchen, however, I personally love cooking and sharing food with people who I care.
When cooking comes to a job male chef often gets better opportunities and payment than female chef. Even in Korea most of the chefs come out in the TV shows are mainly male chef.

Poster of equal payment
In construction industry or the place requires strength often does not give an equal opportunity and payment to female. However, it is not about the gender. It is more about who that person is. There are men who are weaker than women, and women who has better skill than men, however, in these industries they often discriminate female.

Upade Post

So, I changed my project somewhat after talking to the professor, instead of doing this video the professor helped me and I decided on photography, it will still be based on nails. I don't have much of an update as of right now but I follow this youtube channel casually, based on nails and I was planning on maybe doing nail art from her tutorials.(https://www.youtube.com/user/simplynailogical). As well as creating a tumblr blog where I can publish these phots. I will be sure to update this post more as I investigate what more I can do.

Project update & quotes

24th April

My project has been a bi-weekly information documentation of influential women in criminology. So far, I have seven complete updates, ranging from women across different professional fields, and even women who aren't real, but fictional characters.
In each post, I try to format it with an initial image with an edited background, the name of the woman, and a quote said by, or about them. My most recent update had very little information due to the lack of documentation on her. My own research wasn't necessary to determine why the first black female attorney wasn't given such a permanent platform at the time. I also include other pictures of significant aspects of their lives; for Penelope Garcia, I added images of her wardrobe, for Kim Kardashian, screenshots of her most poignant tweets. I think it's important that I make these covers myself; I use an app called R4ve, which allows me to make the covers interesting and original to me, which I feel makes these projects truly mine. I also use this program to format images to detail the image credits and sources used in the post for any interested parties reading.

I don't go to a specific source for information on these women because they're so varied; I can't expect a magazine publishing about Kim Kardashian's latest antics to write about the criminology theories developed by Freda Adler, which is again, why I list my sources for each post because it's impossible to simply say I use ____ website.

I really enjoy writing up these little posts because they're small enough for the casually interested rather than a whole essay targeted at scholars or other students in my field. I'm looking forward to completing this project which will conclude at 13 women by the time my project is due to be discussed on the 8th, traditionally an unlucky number but there isn't anything foreboding about spreading female success.

Quotes

Due Wednesday 4/24

‘It’s far better to pie on our feet than to live on our knees.” – to protest against inequality is so much more important than living to put up with the injustice of the powers restricting freedoms, people who were collecting and coveting a lot of wealth while others were starving to death in the exact same city were targeted. One of which was Bill Gates, who is now very vocal about his philanthropism and has been for a few years. I wonder if this experience acted as a catalyst.

“They protest the use of surveillance cameras in public places because they believe these cameras violate a constitutionally protected right to privacy.” – there are cameras throughout every aspect of our life, it’s easier now to see into people’s lives through nefarious means, people can hack into cameras on phones, laptops, home security, there’s even public websites specifically for this. While most of these are likely used by perverts, the government doesn’t need to so publicly invade our resources to be used against us, because they’re the ones who set the infrastructure, including security cameras.

Final Project update

My final project is going well. I have held 3 classes so far with approximately 5 females on average attendance. The classes themselves are progressing how I hoped they would. The women are really shocked that there are such simple moves can make a huge impact. We actually have had amazing conversations after class about women in society.
One of the things I have really struggled with is taking photos & Videos. In my first and 3rd class, I was the only instructor so I was constantly being active with them and answering questions so it was extremely hard to stop and take photos.
My last goal with this project is to do a class in public * speaking it into existence *. I really wanna hold one of my last classes in a public place such as a park. I have tried 2 weekends ago and 10 minutes into it... It began to pour.  I will try again this weekend though!
As per my research, This is what motivated me to do a public class. I found a performance art piece that I will show in my final presentation that was so powerful to me and connected to my theme of seeing women under a different light. The people in the comments found it " stupid" and the world is going " insane" but I understood what they were doing and found it very moving.
This following picture is from my second class where one of my senseis happened to be at the dojo as well.
* more to come*

Semester Project Update- Karla Almonte

I have been struggling with the picking out a style for my posters. For the past couple of days, I have been experimenting with different layouts, typefaces, and color palettes. Yet, I haven't found a style that fits perfectly the message that I am trying to convey.
Here's an example of one of my experiments and also the original illustration.  The first example is in Spanish because my posters will be target to Spanish-speaking communities, however I plan on also doing them in English for the purpose of the class and everybody understanding my message.
I have consulted by mentor, and she had suggested for me to mess around  with the drawing itself and turning it into a darker depiction of the victim so the message of the poster is clearer; I am very hesitant about it but I will provide the imagery she suggested as inspiration so I can get your feedback.
Experiment I: "My life could've continued, but you took it"

Style of poster suggested by mentor.

Final Semester Project Update

This past Saturday I conducted an interview with Dr. Coleman who gave great responses about facing woman adversity as a successful woman scientist. She stated: "I never thought that I would talk about it because honestly, I thought by talking about the difference I am being chauvinistic about myself". She also agreed with my beliefs that it is unfortunate that we live in a society where we have to say "women in science".  The questions that I asked her included:  how has yourgender made your career journey different? How have you coped with the adversities you have faced? What advice would you give to young woman pursuing a stem career?
By interviewing her, she also gave me advice about how I should go about creating a platform for women empowerment.  We agreed that most people would be more willing to watch videos over reading a blog. This was a great point brought up. I am not too sure how to go about it. The options are to create: a youtube channel while creating an instagram previewing short clips of the full videos. Perhaps an in depth blog would be a  good idea in the future.
In addition,  I did speak to the doctor that I would be interviewing. She said she would love to participate but after she comes back into the state.

About myself:
Hello everyone! My name is Johanna, a current biology student pursuing a career in science. I have decided to help create a community of successful women in STEM. I hope that you gain something from this video and future videos to come. Most importantly, acknowledge that
you can pursue your dreams and passions despite the adversities you may face along the way.

Update for project

Update: I finished recording my video with the help of others. It took two sessions to record. The first session is a general overview of the gym, the trainers, and the amount of kids who joined. We were letting the kids know that we were going to host an exhibition for the public so they can see how much the boxing program has grown up until this point. I got to interview many people throughout the two sessions, and you get the see the different outlooks of those individuals. Whether it’s a young kid, a teenager or an adult I got to see different perspectives, which was one of my goals while I was filming. The second session was mainly to see how the exhibition turned out to be. While still interviewing you get to see my dad, trainers, and other volunteers preaching about how important the youth is to us and without them and the help of others the boxing program will not be running. The goal is not for them to become a professional boxer but to use this tool for school, home, themselves, and most importantly their future. We want them to become leaders in this world and the first step into becoming a leader is having discipline because without that you won’t be able to move ahead. Throughout the video you will see all of us motivating the youth and the goal is to impact them so they can see that all were trying to do is uplift them. Our job is to be the role models they truly deserve.

Update for project

Update: May 1st.
Reprinted newly created posters per professors request.  My car was stolen so right now having bad week.

Update: My posters are completed I picked them up.

Update:  I created the posters and sent them to the photo center to be printed out.  It cost $37 dollars I believe.  I'm already paying all my bills alone, and living alone so I hope this poster works to get my point across for activism.

Right now I'm working on designing my poster. I emailed and followed up to see where I can post it.  I'm doing the art myself, I admit I'm not much of an artist so I am keeping it simple.  Right here so far is what I have done which is going on the poster.  I am going to keep things simple as I mentioned.

Feast & Famine/Art & Activism

In the exhibition Feast and Famine there was a lot of projects that caught my attention. Each of the art projects tells a story on food, economics, body image, rape, and the environment. Each of the art work has a powerful meaning. There are two art works that connects to the project I am doing on the environment; first is a project by Willie Cole his work is called Clear Pool and another work by Mike Libby his work is called You Are My Sunshine. These two projects explain how a bee and a bottle can affect the environment.
Willie Cole Clear Pool this art project is made out of plastic of bottles

This art project is called Clear Pool and it’s made with many plastic bottles put together to represent a pool. It looks simple and it may not look very interesting; but it has a big message to it and it affects the environment. People drink water out of a plastic bottle because it is cheap it does not cost more than a dollar and people are already use to this norm. However, before the bottle water was invented people drank out of the tap and the people did not have pay to drink water; but then the bottle of water was invented and sold claiming that it comes from a natural spring. So now you have pay to drink water but before it never cost anything to drink out of a tap. People in the United States now discard 1,500 of bottles every second which is more that 30 billion of bottles every year (ADD LINK). However, the worst thing is that only 30% of bottle will be recycled and the rest will go to landfills and oceans. Plastic is harmful for the environment because of the chemicals it contains and that are release to the soil and oceans that cause serious harm to the species and it is a pollutant. Because of these toxic chemicals plastic cannot be burned or destroyed so it is complicated to recycle and I believe this is the message Willie Cole is trying to say. There should be an alternative to plastic.

Clear Pool art project shows how plastic bottles are harmful for the environment and the project I am doing is on the carbon footprint. The carbon footprint is a greenhouse gas which is carbon dioxide and human activates are responsible for this. These carbon footprints are burning of fuel, transportation, electricity, and emission. These activities are the cause of releasing carbon dioxide to the atmosphere and if the more carbon is released the earth will be affected. This is why carbon dioxide is a pollutant because cars, planes, and the burning of fossil fuels release this gas.
Mike Libby  You Are My Sunshine a bee sculpture

You Are My Sunshine is a bee sculpture and it symbolizes how bees are important to the environment. However, people do not see it that way; they see them as pests and they got to have to get rid of it. However, bees are harmless insect they won’t attack unless they are provoked. They are like any other animal or insect they protect their territory. There are also people that fear bees and they will try to avoid it and try to find a way to get rid of them. But bees are not a nuances they help the environment. They pollinate plants which help plants grow and framers like bees because it helps their crops grow (ADD A LINK). Without the bees their will not be many plants; however, people that fear bees or see them as pests do not see how important they are to our environment. Bees do not have the longest lifespan and if a bee stings a person it is like suicide to them because they will die in a couple of minutes because when they sting the stinger is pulled out of their body and their guts are coming out.

Feast and Famine

Martena Grace
Feast and Famine

The Exhibit Feast and Famine was a very exciting collection of art that used food as a way to symbolize politics, economics, body images and the most obvious is food justice. Every art piece brought a different angle to different issues but there were two that really stood out to me. The first one is " what were you wearing piece" and the collage of the shirt as one and the second art piece is " Pollen"

Even though they were different pieces they spoke to the same theme and message to me.

Piece 1 : " What were you wearing"
is what sexual violence victims were wearing
 the day they were violated
Piece 2: This is the same idea of what were you wearing
but the victims wrote their truth

When I saw these pieces in the exhibit, I looked at them very briefly but immediately I was appealed and absolutely disgusted. However, the more I stared at them every time I saw them, the more I really felt these emotions that are unexplainable. It is simple to hear of rape and sexual violence and think " oh man poor you " and feel bad for the person but the average thought never goes past that.  Seeing this piece brought streams of tears and pain to me and I loved it. I appreciate art that is able to communicate an emotion. I always have a hard time hearing all of the stories that the victims are brave enough to share because it breaks my heart and this brought a whole new perspective of it to me. Take a look at the last picture in piece 1, that tiny, adorable dress. A beautiful innocent human being was wearing that dress and she got assaulted. Seeing their clothes laid out next to each other is eye-opening and revealing to the issues. There was a little baby in there, scared and confused and in pain while an animal takes advantage of her. The average person wouldn't think of that 1-year-old or that girl next to her in just PJs living her life. The artist took an issue that is often shameful to talk about and forced people to look at it. Forced people to feel it and that is so beautiful Asking a person " what were you wearing" when hearing they got assaulted is insulting and absolute garbage. There is no excuse or reason for assaulting someone. There is no excuse or reason for assaulting a baby and I wish people stop trying to fish for one.
This related to my project because I want to empower these females. I want my students leaving my class knowing how to destroy a man if he even tried to touch them and get out of any situation with as little harm as possible. But that is only a small portion of what I want them to get out of it. Learning self-defense will make you more in control of your body and in return more in control of yourself. I hope they gain self-confidence in themselves overall and to eventually grow so comfortably in herself to never allow a man to use them in any shape or form. The bell hooks reading states," Expose the notion that men are all powerful and women powerless" There is definitely patriarchy that is still so stuck onto our society that men are automatically more powerful than a woman..why. This oppression has been set as the norm since the stone ages but why? The only thing that makes men different than women are a few inches in between their thighs. No big deal. So why did we give men all of this power and control to think using and abusing women is okay. I genuinely hope my classes spark a chain reaction where women are taking care of their body and feeling confident and powerful in themselves. Not just physically but mentally and emotionally. The more confidence in ourselves we have, the less nonsense we will take from others because we know our value and I hope every woman knows her value.

The second piece that I believe is suited for my project is "Pollen" By Christopher Russell.

Piece 3: Pollen by Christopher Russel -
Showcasing the beauty of  bees.

This piece highlights the importance of bees for OUR survival. In the article, Why bees matter so much to humans it states, "two percent of  bee species contributes 80 percent of the crop pollination visits observed globally( Downing 1)" This is clearly saying bees are the foundation of life. They are the majority of plant pollination which is our main food source. Our food web relays on bees to pollinate or everything will fall apart and nothing will grow to feed us ( animals, plants etc). The same foundation the bees are setting influences the foundation I am aiming to set with my project. As explained above, my aim is to empower women and have them feel in control of their bodies and their lives. The hope is to empower women so intensely that they do not need it anymore. My project was only a few classes but maybe one woman in one class will leave with a spark in her and spread it to the next woman until its contagious. If women as a unit can establish the equality and respect that we are deprived of, then they will be setting the foundation for the next generation of women to continue in the same path. Just like bees set the foundation of life, all of the movements to empower women should be thriving to inspire and eventually set a foundation of strength and confidence so strong that women should feel no need to be inferior to men in any way.
The artist created a piece that required attention. From afar looks interesting so you move closer to understand what it is and you see the beautiful bees with subtle details. If this was just a large bee on the wall on a honeycomb, it would give the same message but it would not have the same effect. I am not sure if there was a description of the piece but I do know that bees are in danger of going extinct and this piece is highlighting the importance of them and bringing awareness that if these precious bees die, we lost all of our food sources. In the Interventionists it states,"Rakowitz tapped into the existing heating system of the building with a network of ducts and fans" This is describing the project Michael Rakowtiz did in order to bring awareness to the lack of heating systems available in low-income areas. It was obvious and clear what his project was about as he literally put heating ducts in. That is what Christopher did with this piece, he wanted to make a statement about bees so he created bees. The two projects are similar in how strongly they related their piece to their cause.

Piece 4: Collage of supportive message to
victims of sexual assault

I decided to keep this 3rd piece last because to me, it is so powerful. Victims of sexual assault often feel alienated and that people would not understand them or how they feel. That is true. One can not truly feel something unless they have experienced it. One thing for sure is we can't change the past but that collage helps the victims know they are not alone and there really are people who are there for them. Occasionally, people in pain just need to know someone is there for them. I truly admire this art piece. I get very happy to see supportive messages like this and it inspired me to involve message techniques similar to this in my own project.

Response to the Gallery Visit - Lauren Findlay

“Artists are the gatekeepers of truth.” Anonda Bell spoke these words as she introduced us to the curated pieces that we were shown to our visit to the Paul Robeson gallery. She explained that art made people think, do something, not just stand out as something “pretty in people’s living rooms.” Two pieces that stood out, made me think and want to do something as a response was the initial pieces we were shown regarding sexual assault. These two pieces also connected to my project, through the nature of crime via assault and abuse of others.

Stitches of Strength
The first was a piece called Stitches of Strength. This was a very meaningful display of the words of survivors, their clothing, and the support from their loved ones. A large quilt sewn together “literally and figuratively, by stitches of strength.” Some of the messages read very heart felt advise and reaffirmation of worth, something victims may have lost through their attack. It’s all too common that women experience some form of sexual harassment, asking around a group of friends will usually bring forward stories of being groped in public by a stranger, or worse. By staring a discussion, survivors can find strength in each other, in women offering a support that they aren’t alone, as well as men, who are shown they are not less of a man because of the actions of another. Men can have an added level of suffering due to the patriarchal hold society has over them, that they must behave and act a certain way. Projects like this normalise the healing process, freeing men from the chains that toxic masculinity has placed on them. Common themes on the quilt are “you are not alone” and “don’t stay silent”, encouraging survivors to come forward into an atmosphere of understanding and support. I think this is a beautiful piece that can only heal people, each little message is beautiful. As April is the month for sexual assault awareness, teal is the colour chosen to show support for survivors. There are on campus projects such as Rutgers NO MORE and the Office for Violence Prevention and Victim Assistance that are on hand to respond to those in need of support, which is open 24/7. To not only have this clear, stunning, exhibit of support, but also have infrastructure to help is so important; it’s so easy to pin on a teal ribbon and say you care about assault victims, but to set up a station readily available to help, that’s when survivors will feel more confident to speak out.

Image result for aids quilt
NAMES Project AIDS Memorial Quilt
We were told this piece was inspired by the AIDS memorial quilt to spread awareness, and humanise the numbers of victims in a time where the condition was seen as some kind of punishment to some. This quilt is still on display, moving around various locations, reporting a real change in statistics for people getting diagnosed, but also falling cases of sufferers. Between 1987 and 1996, 1.7 million dollars have been raised due to the effort of the quilt for research to tackle the AIDs crisis. The Interventionists actually directly discuss the effects of art on the real world issue of AIDS "Gran Fury and Act Up rewrote the rulebook regarding activist iconography in the mid-1980s by appropriating sophisticated media strategies for enlightening the public about the politics behind the AIDS crisis." The size of this collective quilt was definitely an aspect in how much attention the crisis was given from the otherwise uncaring public Without the donation money put forward, we could've been decades behind any medical advances we currently have today.
Clothing of victims turned into symbols of support
The second piece was from the same collection, but instead of a quilt of messages of support, it was outfits of what victims were assaulted in. Some pieces have been written on, offering messages in the same tone as the quilt before it, while others have been left blank. This is such an important message to convey because so often victims will hear questions like "What were you wearing?" Or their clothing will be used as an excuse, as if outerwear gives another person the right to harm someone. "This is what Bourdieu called the habitus. This is the way one navigates and thinks about the world." Cultural capital is influenced by the media and because of it, we think certain ways and perform certain acts. Narratives exist to influence the public to follow the collective actions promoted by those in a higher position, and because it's not in their interest to make women feel safer at night alone, because women aren't a broad aspect of the upper classes, they don't hold the same cultural capital as straight, white men. Women navigate life with peculiar routines such as keys between their fingers, pepperspray in hand, a friend on speed dial if their date turns out to be a creep, self-set curfews, no headphones while walking at night. It's strange that we do this because without it, we're at more risk.
"But she was asking for it, dressed like that!"
The most heartbreaking piece here was, in my opinion, this as the obvious choice. All of the previous outfits were adult outfits, where the logic for those problematic beliefs apply, but when written about this outfit, it really establishes just how insane it is to imply someone's clothing warrants abuse. Was this child responsible for dressing "slutty" or "provocative? The answer is no, no one deserves any kind of violence brought onto them because of their clothing. Another issue with this mentality is the idea that if you have evaded a sexual assault because you dressed more conservatively, the attacker will simply look for someone else who isn't dressed the same as you. These people aren't trying to protect people from sexual assault when they tell you to "cover up," they're telling the attacker to attack someone else. While this isn't necessarily advertisement for a product, but for a state of mind. "Good advertising does not just circulate information. It penetrates the public mind with desires and belief." Seeing power's quote here, I feel, portrays how people may actually change their views on sexual assault because of this image. Such a stark contrast to how their beliefs relate to the real world will stick with them. I already am against the belief that victims provoke attackers via clothing, but this little dress really has stayed with me and "penetrated" my mind because of how upsetting it is.

With my project, I hope to counter some of these habitus aspects, or direction attention towards women who have bravely rejected these social norms in effort to achieve a greater level of equality or even just serve their own career goals. All of the women featured in my project have influenced the cultural shift towards a more equal society with opportunity for all. While my project is online, there have been online versions of both of these projects by other artists that can be searched. I hope that with an online presence, there's more mobility to reach people with common interests via hashtags.

Feast and Famine

My two pieces that I chose from the Feast & Famine exhibition were Thin by Lauren Greenfield and a poster Renee Cox made. My semester project is about gender, gender roles and the stereotypes that our society perpetuates.

The first piece I will be talking about is thin, which, I think, fits well into what my semester project is. This piece talks about eating disorders and photographs women that are undergoing treatment and a woman that overcame her eating disorder. It really shows this unrealistic pressure that society has put on women in order to stay desirable and if they are not deemed desirable, they are less valuable. It shows women in a very vulnerable position, it is very intimate, and the photos show a story of these women battling with their eating disorders. I think the project is very telling because not only do we see these women under extreme pressure to fit in, but we also do not see any men, whether they just did not want to be photographed or maybe they weren’t many there I think its an important thing to note. According to the Nation Eating Disorders Association “In the United States alone, eating disorders will affect 10 million males at some point in their lives. But due in large to cultural bias, they are much less likely to seek treatment for their eating disorder”. In my semester project I will be discussing the patriarchy, and here is a good example of how it negatively affects men. We live in a society today where men are not allowed to be vulnerable and taught it makes you less of a man if you do so but its okay for a woman because they are already deemed weaker than men. Eating disorders are associated with woman not men, which only further hurts us as a society.

The Second piece I will be talking about is the poster Renee Cox made, which the first time I saw it, caught my eye, it was one of my favorites. It’s a piece about race and racism in products. I never really thought of Aunt Jemima as a racist image, to be honest I never really thought of Aunt Jemima period. It really has opened my eyes, and despite that it may not be (hopefully) still associated with racism, the fact that the image comes from a stereotype that stemmed from racism is a problem. I think we have to push back on and be more conscious of things like these in order to stop ourselves in further being complacent and realize that these images hurt and perpetuate stereotypes of African Americans. Just like in the last chapter “Occupying Space” of “Seeing Power” by Nato Thompson, in the first few paragraphs it describes a protest, a march, for walkers right. I think this poster made by Renee Cox is another form of protest, which is why she places herself and two other people, that she will not allow herself to be complacent, the images of her and of Aunt Jemima and Uncle ben are completely different, from their facial expressions to the clothes they are wearing. Their clothed like superheroes and their pose, says strength, like she is fighting against the stereotypes.

The two art pieces I chose from the exhibition are What it Once Was by Tamara Kostianovsky and a chrome slice of pie.  Tamara used various fabrics and materials to recreate butchered parts.  Her intention is to bring forward the vulnerability of poverty, consumption and the compulsive needs of the body.  This piece and many of her other works are designed to confront viewers with the nutritional needs of the body. I feel that this piece best correlates to my semester project. My project was focused on the activism found in the paintings of sonograms. The exhibition encouraged me to look deeper.

The absence of sonogram accessibility and fetal well being to absence of sustenance and nourishment in third world nations is at an all time high.  Children's hunger and fetal well being are threatened. Lack of healthy sustenance is a huge issue in creating nations. Without significant assets, numerous men, ladies and kids head to sleep hungry. Handling lack of healthy sustenance should be a need for everybody, particularly pregnant ladies. A lady's nourishments impacts both her wellbeing amid pregnancy and the strength of her child. Without legitimate consideration, she is defenseless to diseases and her infant's well being is in danger. Lack of healthy sustenance amid pregnancy can cause obliterating results. A woman that is undernourished is in danger of genuine medical problems for both herself and her infant.
In addition to the fact that it is impossible that her wholesome status will improve all through the pregnancy, however her body encounters extra demands because of the developing infant. At the point when her body is unfit to get or store enough supplements required to help incipient baby’s development, the cells may not partition appropriately, bringing about an opportunity that the embryo's advancement will be debilitated. This prompts the infant being conceived at a low birth weight, which frequently prompts serious psychological and formative shortfalls. An infant's organs create amid the initial five weeks of pregnancy. All together for the organs to develop appropriately, it is basic for ladies to be sound and have sustenance supplies promptly accessible. A lady's calorie intake needs to increase with pregnancy. An extra 150 calories for every day is expected to help the child in the initial three months of the pregnancy. In month four, the extra calories required increment to 300 every day. What's more, ladies must have the correct supplements in their eating regimen, for example, nourishments with folic corrosive, iron calcium, protein, nutrient B12, nutrient D and nutrient A. As per the World Food Program, half of every pregnant lady in creating nations are weak which causes around 110,000 passings amid labor for each year. Without enough supplements, a child is at higher danger of cerebrum harm, untimely birth, underdevelopment of organs, passing and that's just the beginning.
On the off chance that a baby ends up malnourished in the belly, the harm can be lasting. Improving sustenance is a venture that could spare the lives of women around the globe. It will also diminish the quantity of birth deformities and incapacities found in infants and youthful kids. In many creating nations, nourishment is fundamental to advancing a glad and solid way of life where no individual hits the sack hungry. Subjective advancement is affected by numerous variables, including nourishment. There is an expanding gathering of writing that proposes an association between improved sustenance and ideal cerebrum work. Supplements give building obstructs that assume a basic job in cell expansion. Ultrasound is an essential job in wellbeing advantages around the world, as it has took into account early conclusion of both fetal and maternal well being conditions, prompting an expanded survival rate, particularly on the planet's more unfortunate countries.
I did not catch the name of the artist behind the chrome pie slice.  The chrome pie slice is on a very ordinary plate. It was honestly one of my favorite pieces in the exhibition.  I looked at it from a deeper perspective and found it correlates to a much deeper issue.  Here you see a chrome pie on a very plain plate. Chrome pie symbolizing the excessive wealth and resources in some places around the world. The ordinary plate symbolizing the lack of these resources and the excessive poverty and hunger in other regions.
