"Complaint" and project connection
The project I propose relates to women empowerment. Specifically, raising the question of gender equality. Do we live in a society that makes women feel comfortable when deciding their career choices? How should we progress as a society despite such adversity? How should women deal with different discriminatory comments? The proposal of creating a website with interviews/advice from successful women in STEM aims to answer all of the aforementioned questions. By building such content, there is a creation of advocacy and activism in the area of gender inequality. The ultimate missions is to create a community that makes women feel comfortable and encouraged to pursue their dreams despite common society notions.
This project parallels with the activism going on in both Guerrilla Girls and the Yes Men. The Guerrilla Girls specifically focuses on women movement. The poster on page 73 denotes the following quote: "What I want for Mother's Day: I don't want candy. I don't want flowers. I want a lease and keys." This specific piece stood out as it pulls away from the standard "emotional" doings for women. Rather it depicts women as wanting materials that in society typically men own. Overall, the fact that the Guerilla Girls wear masks really emphasizes and takes away women beauty which in return allows society to view women as neutral. People who are also capable of many things besides being beautiful and reproducing. As for the Yes Men, they do activism by performing actions that aim to bringing awareness about prevalent social and political issues. Their actions do require a lot of bravery but I believe that through these actions they could get into law related issues. That is not the aim of my project. The content I hope to create relates to empowering women while bringing awareness to the issue as interview videos will be out there.
