"In a nonprofits (a form of structural node with which I am more than a little familiar), the economic math is rather different. From time to time, almost every nonprofit organizes a gala that caters to an extremely wealthy class of donor, in hopes to get those donors to purchase a table (Seeing Power, pg. 67)."
I like this quote because I worked for nonprofit and not for profit and I recall that they sold tables. When they sold tables we were told to make sure we were presentable and over friendly to possible donors visiting the facilities, "everyone must be on their best behavior."
"One of a gatekeeper's most crucial functions is the production of legitimation. Legitimation, of course, needn't come only from The New York Times --- it can derive from something as simple as a person you can trust... (Seeing Power, pg. 69).
I love this quote in Seeing Power. Recently it reminds me of the New York Times and CNN and other news stations who I use to trust, but now I do not trust any news. It's funny how we begin to trust these big powers that are, but we fall blindly unto what they say in a lot of cases, when in fact their interests could be against our own.
