"Complaint" and project connection
The Guerrilla Girls and the Yes Men
are the activist who are against the patriarchy in our society. The Guerrilla
Girls are standing up against sexism and the Yes Men are standing up against capitalism
in our society. My major is business, and my semester project is going to focus
on how unfair females are being treated in the business field or any other area
in our society. The Guerrilla Girls and the Yes Men was a great example that has
already happened and is still ongoing. Through these activists, I was greatly
inspired for my semester project.
Guerrilla Girls Poster |
I could say that the Guerrilla Girls
inspired me the most for my semester project. The Guerrilla Girls are an
ongoing female activist group in the United States. They have made a lot of
different types of posters that show they are against a lot of discrimination
that women face in our society. One of the poster that the Guerrilla Girls published
was about the wage gap between males and females. In the United States of
America, women earn only two-thirds of what men earn in the same job. According
to the Guerrilla Girls, “Women have never gained economic equality by just
working hard and being good girls”. (39) Women have been discriminated or denigrated
with their work all over the history. Women have been treated as an object of
men’s property, have been ignored or have had their ideas stolen by men. Every
human being deserves equal rights without any kind of discrimination.
Yes Men Prankster Activism |
The Yes Men is the male activist group
who are against capitalism and the people who have power. My semester project
is not so similar to the Yes Men, however, I could still relate my project to
the Yes Men. Capitalism is the social struggle with the class which is divided by
people’s wealth. Wealthy people will get better opportunities for studying and
earning money and the poor will stay poor. The Yes Men wanted to humiliate the
people who have power and wealth by acting out like them. According to an interview about the Yes Men, “We hope that people who see this stuff will be as
shocked and outraged as we were when we experienced it ourselves”. Capitalism
also includes sexism as well, such as people who have power and money in our
society are mainly men.
An activists’ goal is influencing other
people by telling and sharing regarding what that activist thinks or has gone
through. My semester project will be a poster that will influence others to
face the facts of the discrimination that women face in our society like the Guerrilla
Girls. Women have had to fight many battles to come as far as they are now and
it is time for everyone all over the globe to realize that humans are humans
and women deserve to be heard. I hope to prevent having this dilemma being pushed
aside and to have people think once more about how important equality is through
my complaint.
