Complaint
My semester project explores
gender, masculinity, and conformity. Similar to the Guerrilla Girls my project
will advocate against the patriarchy. It's a little harder to connect my
project to the Yes Men because they not only do such outrageous
"hoaxes" but they tend to focus more on the capitalism. Still the
patriarchy affects every aspect of how we live as a society so in order to
dismantle the patriarchy you need to be aware of the problems of capitalism.
One might even argue that the word Patriarchy and Capitalism are
interchangeable.
My complaint would be why do we as a society continue to entertain
these gender roles that only hurt us as a society, and solidify the patriarchy.
I think Bell Hooks describes, when speaking of the patriarchy she says
"Nothing discounts the old antifeminist projection of men as all powerful
more than their basic ignorance of a major facet of the political system that
shapes and informs male identify and sense of self from birth until
death". she continues to explain that we are assigned patriarchal
gender roles from childhood and we are taught how to fulfill these roles. I
think its important to step back, think and ask why and until we as a society
start to implement change on our views of gender it will only continue to hurt
us.
I think society is already heading in a more equalized society, but I
think we need to be more conscious around how children are being raised instead
of continuing the traditions and cycles of these gender norms. Another thing
would be to look inwards of our society info structure and try to dismantle these systems that are harming our society.
